National Health Information Centre (NHIC)

NHIC is a computerized center, specialized in processing and disseminating public health information. The World Health Organization had initiated this project in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health and the Lebanese University. 

Objectives 

The objectives of the NHIC are to provide and improve the access to reliable and up-to-date HEALTH INFORMATION. 

The door is open for support and contribution from donor agencies, development organizations, health institutions and other potential partners. 

 

 

 

 



The following are among the services and activities targeted and to be provided: 

  • Documenting and disseminating national health information 

  • Dissemination of WHO information 

  • Establishment of a national health information network for the public 

  • Allowance to access information published by authoritative agencies at global, regional and national levels

NHIC will be kept dynamic responding to the needs of its users in the following area:

Facilities 

NHIC is equipped with state of the art computer equipment to facilitate reliable access to all types of health information, including: 

  • Computerized library of about 5000 WHO titles on all aspects of health, 15 journals and audiovisual materials 

  • Full text and bibliographic databases and databanks covering priority health issues such as: AIDS, environment health, chemical safety, reproductive health

  • 18 internet access points linked to reliable electronic medical information resources (10 databases and 1,000 electronic medical magazines)

  • Multi media room

Users 

The NHIC is being established to offer information services to the general public of Lebanon and will serve:

  • Health professionals and practitioners such as physicians, public health specialist, pharmacists, researchers, etc 

  • University and high school students 

  • Media 

  • General public

NHIC is offering its services in three ways:

  • Directly to registered visitors, including internet access 

  • Respond to information inquiries 

  • Dissemination of information (newsletters, reports, etc)

Information Resources 

The NHIC will be focus on collecting reliable health information resources covering all the health priorities of Lebanon. This will be made in several phases


Phase I (Executed)

Users can access all WHO information published at global, regional and national levels, including:

  • Fact sheets and press material 

  • Numerical and statistical health databases 

  • Training and learning materials and multimedia formats 

  • Access to full text on-line Medical database (10 databases & 1,000 specialized electronic magazines) using the internet to facilitate the retrieval process of medical information inquiries from such databases: Medline, Biomed, etc 

 

Phase II 

Users will be able to access NHIC database through the INTERNET

  • NHIC web site will be created

  • NHIC database will be published
