World Health Day 2011
The World Health Day was celebrated by the World Health Organization on
7 April 2011. The theme for this year was “Combat Drug Resistance”,
which was particularly chosen to draw worldwide attention to a subject
of major importance to global health. This WHO, since its establishment
more than six decades ago, has celebrated World Health Day every year.
This period has witnessed key improvements in the control of diseases by
antimicrobials. The success achieved in the control of communicable and
chronic diseases through optimal therapeutic management is considered to
be a victory for the various global public health initiatives; and for
the realization of WHO’s vision of assuring effective drugs for those
who need them in order to reduce the risk of microorganisms to
individual and to community health.
In Lebanon, on this occasion a press conference was held on 7 April 2011
under the patronage of H.E. the Minister of Public Health (MOPH), Dr.
Mohammad Jawad Khalifeh and in collaboration with the Orders of
Physicians, Pharmacists and Nurses and the support of the WHO Country
Office to launch the WHD 2011 national campaign.
The National Campaign was launched with the speech of the WHO Regional
Director for the Eastern Mediterranean which was delivered by Dr. Sameen
Siddiqi, WHO Representative in Lebanon. This was followed by the remarks
the President of the Orders of Nurses, Ms. Claire Zablit; the President
of the Orders of the Pharmacists, Dr. Ziad Nassour; President of the
Order of Physicians, Dr. Sharaf Abou Sharaf; and a presentation on
“Challenges and Opportunities for Combating Drug Resistance in Lebanon”
given by Dr. Ziad Mansour, WHO-Lebanon and commented by the Director
General of the MOPH, Dr. Walid Ammar. At the end, H.E. the Minister of
MOPH, Dr. Mohamad Jawad Khalifeh gave a speech on future directions for
tackling Antimicrobial Resistance in Lebanon.
The press conference was attended by eighty five participants and was
covered by the media.
